Our Book

About fourteen years ago I initiated a long-term botanical survey on Grootbos. Basically this meant setting up some fifty long term monitoring plots, each five by ten meters that were marked with concrete lintels in the south western corners. The idea was to document the vegetation on Grootbos in 1997 and then monitor changes in the flora over time. At the time we also recorded all plant species on our journeys between the vegetation plots. The result was a first botanical plant list for Grootbos and the Walker Bay region. Around that time Heiner Lutzeyer started photographing the flowers on Grootbos and sending plants we did not know to Kirstenbosch herbarium for identification. Between Heiner and myself we continued collecting, documenting and photographing the flowers of Grootbos from 1997 to the present. This is a unique study that documented the flora on the 1850 hectare nature reserve in all seasons and during all stages of post fire regrowth. Our book;  FIELD GUIDE TO THE FLORA OF GROOTBOS NATURE RESERVE AND THE WALKER BAY REGION, describes 410 of the 765 plants recorded on the reserve, with an emphasis on ‘showy’ flowers, species of conservation concern and those that are most likely to be encountered in the greater Walker Bay region. Each species is accompanied by a vivid photograph taken by Heiner as well as the plants common name (where known), a full description of the plant and where applicable its uses. The guide also includes an easy to use key for identifying the trees of the region, as well as a comprehensive bird list.
We are going to use many of the beautiful photos taken by Heiner in our Whats flowering section of this blog.

Dear Sean Privett, I am a PhD biologist highly enthusiastic about botany and gardening although I developed my professional career as Microbiologist and Infectious Diseases specialist in a research institute in Spain.
I will be in Cape Town from 18th November to 15th December 2013. I wish to buy your book entitled “Field guide to the Flora of Grootbos Nature Reserve” before my travel to begin to know and identify the species which I can find at fynbos but, as far as I know, it is not possible to pay it by credit card to send to Madrid, Spain. Do you know some way to get it?
Moreover, I am interested on botany activities to enjoy during my stay in Sudafrica and I will be very grateful if you can help me with information and/or activities.
    Thank you very much
    David Tarragó
